THE BASICS
Score: Dean College 93, New England College 56
Records: Bulldogs 11-3, 3-1 GNAC | Pilgrims 2-13, 0-4 GNAC
TURNING POINTS
- The two teams battled close in the opening minutes of the game, but Dean quickly turned a two-point, 8 to 6 lead into an 18-point, 28-10 advantage – a 20 to 4 run spanning just under seven minutes.
- An NEC timeout with 8:49 left in the first half not only stopped the Bulldog run, but helped spark a Pilgrim comeback. A 20-11 run over the next five minutes, with both senior guard Theisen Lee (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior guard Alex Williams (Miramar, Fla.) scoring five points a-piece, would bring the 'Grims to within nine points. The Dean lead would be eight points as the two teams went into the locker rooms for halftime.
- In the second half, the Dean Bulldogs would again pull away – this time for good; Dean sophomore guard Frankie Idlett (Miami, Fla.) would lead a 16-3 charge with a quick 11 points in the first four minutes of the half. The visitors would control the game for the remainder of the second half, ultimately taking the GNAC matchup, 93-56.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Dean's Billy Ray Barnes III (Inglewood, Calif.) paced all scorers with 19 points. His teammate Idlett scored 13 points and earned 10 assists on the evening.
- Lee led the Pilgrims with 11 points, all scored in the first half, to go along with five rebounds.
- NEC freshman guard Jalen Francis (Naugatuck, Conn.) added nine points while graduate guard Nick Gomeau (Enfield, Conn.) contributed seven points and six boards.
- The rebounding battle was even with the Bulldogs earning the slight 41-39 edge, but it was the 'Grims shooting woes from beyond-the-arc (0-for-13) and 23 turnovers (to Dean's 14) that did them in.
- NEC did possess a 15-12 advantage on second chance points while both teams found scoring success in the paint with Dean scoring 44 to NEC's 40.
