HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays made their offensive presence known firing off five shots before the most important one come at 19:33 after USJ senior midfielder Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) found junior forward Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) who possessed the ball just few yards above the restraining line. Picard then decided to maneuver and advance her way past an NEC defenders to place herself into scoring territory in front of the goal aiming the shot at the bottom left side of the goal allowing for the Blue Jays to strike first.
- NEC junior goalkeeper Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) had her work cut out for herself in the first half of play. The junior stood her ground at 29:03 where yet again Picard was placed into scoring position in front of the net but wasn't able to achieve the outcome of scoring that she earned early on in the first half. Bomba managed to stand stout for a save but unfortunately the ball deflected off Bomba with the ball still in play leaving it to senior forward Kelsi Ursini (Groton, Conn.) who charged towards it and fired the shot into the back of the net to put the Blue Jays up 2-0 going into halftime.
- Things slowed down tremendously on the USJ side of things thanks to the efforts of the NEC defense as they made the adjustments necessary to mitigate the number of shots taken. In the second half the Blue Jays only managed to get off seven shots as they were capable of taking 15 in the first half against the 'Grims.
- From an offensive perspective for the 'Grims no shots found the back of the net as they were unable to make the most of their opportunities as the GNAC contest concluded in a 2-0 victory for USJ on the evening.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The shots taken overall by the end of the game proved to have made a difference since USJ recorded 22 compared to NEC's 11.
- Both teams were even on the corner kick opportunities as they recorded one respectively.
- Bomba wrapped her evening up at the pitch with eight saves having six of those coming from the first half.
- USJ sophomore goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) ended her outing with seven saves.
