Women’s Soccer Falls Late in Conference Outing at Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The New England College women's soccer team found themselves in a closely contested Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on Wednesday evening at Kelsey Soccer Field in New London, New Hampshire concluding in a 3-2 loss.

THE BASICS
Score:  New England College 2, Colby Sawyer College 3
Records: Pilgrims 0-7-1 0-4-1 GNAC | Chargers 4-3-2, 3-1-2 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first half of conference action between the two teams started out in a tough defensive clash for the first 25 minutes of action. NEC junior goalkeeper Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) was on her toes early on worrying about the six shots fired by the Chargers offense. None was bigger than the one that was taken at 25:14 where CSC senior midfielder Halle Pletzer (Barre, Vt.) launched the ball over the head of Bomba to get the Chargers on scoreboard first.
  • NEC did not waver at the situation at hand but made the most of their opportunities bestowed to them as they earned a corner kick at 29:00. NEC freshman midfielder Madison Bowman (Coventry, Vt.) fired the shot into a crowded area at the goal that landed at the feet of freshman midfielder Michelina Follis (Saugus, Mass.) who snuck the shot past the CSC goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal to put the 'Grims back into the mix of things making it a tie game, 1-1.
  • The 'Grims weren't off the hook as a phenomenal play was made by Bomba at around 3:30 minute mark where the Chargers were advancing down the field entering into scoring position. Bomba put her body out in front of a CSC shot taker obtaining debatably one of the biggest saves of the evening for NEC ensuring the half concluded in a 1-1 tie.
  • Things began to pick up rather quickly on the scoring end of things for both teams. The second half commenced with an NEC own goal benefiting the Chargers to put them out in front 2-1 in their favor.
  • Once again that didn't stop NEC from finding a way as they chose not to falter in the heat of the moment as a throw in allowed for junior midfielder Mia Loewenberg (Milford, Conn.) to position senior defender Darian Taylor (Hudson, N.H.) for a sensational goal from far out that got the 'Grims back into the game evening things up 2-2.
  • Unfortunately, a foul was committed by NEC that granted CSC with a penalty shot that resulted in a goal scored by senior forward Bridgett O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) putting the chargers back on top with 24:40 remaining in the second half, 3-2.
  • The 'Grims were unable to come up with an answer in the time remaining ultimately having the  penalty kick goal from CSC solidify their GNAC victory over the 'Grims on the evening.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bomba ended her night with seven saves at the pitch.
  • CSC split the work at the pitch as freshman goalkeeper Nicole Morello (Wilmington, Mass.) had four saves while freshman goalkeeper Aurora Proulx (Sheldon, Vt.) finished with two.
  • CSC fired off more shots than the 'Grims on the evening as the Chargers recorded 21 to NEC's 12.
  • Corner kicks proved to be a factor as CSC led in this factor of the game ending with 11 compared to the 'Grims who gathered six.
  • Both NEC Taylor and Follis scored their first goal of the season.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field of Don Melander for another GNAC showdown when they play the Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph's at 5:00 PM.
  • CSC plays their next game at Caparso Field from Paxton, Massachusetts as they take on the AMCATS of Anna Maria College at 6:00 PM.
