Women's Soccer Draws Even with Bulldogs

FRANKLIN, MASS. - The New England College women's soccer team produced some strong scoring opportunities but ultimately settled for a draw at Dean College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Longley Athletic Complex in Franklin, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 0, Dean College 0
Records: Pilgrims 0-5-1, 0-2-1 GNAC | Bulldogs 1-3-1, 0-2-1 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half was an evenly matched affair with both sides creating scoring chances but both goalkeepers holding their ground and keeping the opposition off the scoreboard. NEC junior goalkeeper Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) made four saves in the first half while Dean goalie Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) made three.
  • Perhaps the 'Grims best shot opportunity in the first half came with 19:00 remaining as freshman midfielder Michelina Follis (Saugus, Mass.) drove past a pair of defenders and ripped a shot from the edge of the box which hit off the left post of the Bulldogs net.
  • The scoreless tie would continue late into the second half with neither team able to get the scoring started. But for the 'Grims, it was not due to a lack of strong shots on net. With 1:15 remaining in the game, freshman forward Abbey Keyes (Dedham, Mass.) received the Bulldog's goal kick and immediately sent it back in towards the top right corner of the Dean net. However, Gaunt made a great save to deny NEC the go-ahead goal to keep the score at 0-0.
  • With just seven seconds left in the second half, senior forward Shelby McBain (Indianhead, Md.) intercepted a pass near the Bulldogs box and took a shot with three ticks remaining but Gaunt once again would keep the Pilgrims off the board to secure the 0-0 draw.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Bomba had a strong game with seven saves en route to her first career shutout.
  • Gaunt ended the game with nine saves for the Bulldogs.
  • NEC took 14 shots on the day with nine going on net, while Dean took 13 shots - seven of which were on target.

  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday, September 18th, when they return home to host Anna Maria College at 4:00 PM.
  • Dean plays their next game on Tuesday at 3:30 PM at the University of Saint Joseph.
