Women’s Soccer Falls Just Short at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. - The New England College women's soccer team suffered a narrow loss at the hands of Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday at Joanne Merrill Field in Nashua, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 2, Rivier University 3
Records: Pilgrims 0-5-0, 0-2-0 GNAC | Raiders 1-2-2, 1-0-1 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Raiders would strike first around the 10-minute mark in the opening half, as Nadia Laxa (Virginia Beach, Va.) sent a perfect pass from the back line into the NEC box and Elizabeth Jacob (Wilton, N.H.) did the rest to put Rivier up 1-0.
  • In the 14th minute, freshman forward Abbey Keyes (Dedham, Mass.) made an equally perfect pass up the left side of the field and found senior forward Shelby McBain (Indianhead, Md.) who beat the approaching goalkeeper and fired a strike into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
  • Rivier would re-take the lead in the 35th minute on a goal by Camryn Blatchford (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) with the assist again coming from Laxa on a long pass from beyond midfield.
  • Just before halftime, in the 43rd minute, freshman midfielder Madison Bowman (Coventry, Vt.) sent a corner kick in front of the Raiders' net that was eventually found by freshman forward Trinity Bean (Gray, Maine) who sent a left-footed laser past the Rivier goalkeeper. Bean's first collegiate goal would knot the game up at 2-2 and send a tie game into halftime.
  • In the 54th minute, Drea Dwyer (Londonderry, N.H.) would put the Raiders back on top with an unassisted goal that would ultimately prove to be the game winner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rivier goalie Bri Nugent (Killingworth, Conn.) saw four shots on net and stopped two of them in the win.
  • NEC junior goalkeeper Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) made nine saves on the day.
  • Rivier was constantly on the attack with 15 shots on goal compared to NEC's four, yet the Pilgrims were highly efficient with their opportunities.
  • The 'Grims scored one of their goals off their two corner kicks, while the Raiders had six but were unable to turn any of them into goals.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Saturday when they continue GNAC play against Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts at 1:00 PM.
  • Rivier plays their next game on the road at Mitchell on Saturday with a noon start time.
