HENNIKER, N.H. - For the second consecutive week, a representative of the New England College women's lacrosse team has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) player of the week, as graduate midfielder
Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) took home the honors for the week ending on March 24
th.
The team had just one game this past week, a 17-7 win over Dean College on Friday, but Kelly made the absolute most of it. Kelly scored six goals, tying her career-high, and connected on one assist to help lead the team to its third straight victory. But Kelly's impact extended far beyond the offensive end of the field; the graduate was credited with 13 caused turnovers and 15 ground balls as she caused mayhem all over Don Melander Field. The 13 caused turnovers broke her previous school record of 10 that she set last season, and the 15 ground balls matched her own single game record from a year ago.
Kelly is the second consecutive Pilgrim to be recognized as GNAC Player of the Week, joining teammate
Nathalie Antigua (North Brunswick, N.J.) who was recognized for the week ending March 17th.Â
At press time, Kelly leads the GNAC in both caused turnovers and ground balls on the season, with 37 of each, all while having played less games than every single player in the top-10 of both statistics. On a per-game basis, Kelly is averaging 7.4 caused turnovers and 7.4 ground balls, while the next highest rates in the conference are 4.7 and 4.0 per game, respectively. Beyond just the GNAC, Kelly leads the entire NCAA in both areas – proving to be one of the most disruptive players in the country through the early part of the season.
Kelly and the 'Grims will be in search of win number four on Tuesday as they host Colby-Sawyer right here at the Don Melander Field starting at 7:00 PM.
