Women’s Lacrosse Powers Past Falcons on Senior Day

HENNIKER, N.H. -  The New England College women's lacrosse team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 25-2 victory over Albertus Magnus College. With the win, the Pilgrims improve to 10-6 overall and 6-6 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

Prior to the game, the 'Grims honored seniors Gina Sciortino (Billerica, Mass.), Kate Devlin (Walpole, Mass.), Isabella Marzano (Warwick, R.I.), Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.), Jordan Pond (Gardner, Mass.), and Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) as part of their senior day celebration.

The Pilgrims set the tone early, erupting for 12 goals in the opening frame. Gilchrist, junior Carmela Goodwin (Lebanon, N.H.), junior Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.), and sophomore Riley Davis (Weare, N.H.) all scored twice, while McDonald, junior Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.), sophomore Lilly Vaughn (Belmont, N.H.), and freshman Camryn Coutts (Gilford, N.H.) added one goal apiece.

NEC continued its offensive surge in the second, adding four more goals to take a commanding lead into halftime. Gilchrist netted two, while junior Sofia Gualtieri (Montreal, Quebec) and freshman Kendall Purtell (Epsom, N.H.) each found the back of the net.

The Pilgrims maintained control after the break, with Purtell opening the scoring off a feed from Gualtieri. Freshman Lenna Quiter (Penacook, N.H.) followed with her first collegiate goal at the 8:10 mark, with Gualtieri picking up the assist. Midway through the quarter, Devlin surpassed the 100-career ground ball milestone, then capped the frame with her first goal of the season. The Falcons got on the board late, as Sage Sonsini scored for the visitors.

Sonsini added her second goal early in the fourth, but NEC quickly responded. Junior Mae Lafferty (South Boston, Mass.) extended the lead, followed by goals from Gilchrist and Purtell. Pond then recorded her first collegiate goal off an assist from Armour. Freshman Ayla Paley (Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore Kennedy Dwyer (Weare, N.H.) closed out the scoring to secure the 25-2 victory.

16 different Pilgrims found the back of the net, lead by Gilchrist's nine points on five goals and four assists, while adding two ground balls and four draw controls. Purtell notched her first collegiate hat trick, adding two ground balls and a caused turnover. McDonald dished out seven assists, good for second-most in a single game in program history while also tallying a goal, two ground balls, and nine draw controls. Marzano stood strong between the pipes, playing 60 minutes with two saves.

The Pilgrims head south on Wednesday to face GNAC intra-state foe Rivier University at 7:00 PM.
