Men’s Hoops Stopped Short at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The New England College men's basketball team lost 76-64 at Middlebury College on Wednesday evening at Pepin Gymnasium in Middlebury, Vermont in non-conference action.

TURNING POINTS
  • Down by 23 at one point in the second, the 'Grims rallied with an unbelievable 20-6 run, capped off with a layup from NEC graduate guard Nick Gomeau (Enfield, Conn.) with 6:25 to go in the game, pulling the visitors to within single-digits. But the Panthers hunkered down, making six consecutive free throws in the final two minutes to take the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Gomeau led the Pilgrims with a career-high 25 points, shooting ten-of-sixteen from the floor and securing five rebounds.
  • NEC senior guard Alex Williams (Miramar, Fla.) posted his fifth double-double in seven games this season with 20 points and 11 rebounds, tacking on three steals.
  • Middlebury sophomore Kuba Cwalina (New York, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 24 points, shooting four-of-eight from behind the arc.
  • NEC sophomore guard Mike Strazzeri (Chichester, N.H.) added six points.
  • Middlebury junior guard Evan Flaks (Baltimore, Md.) finished with 21 points, shooting five-of-six from behind the arc.
  • Three-point shooting proved decisive, as the Panthers shot 46.9 percent (15-of-32) from downtown compared to 16.7 percent (2-of-12) for the Pilgrims.

  • Up next for NEC, the team hosts MCLA on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
