Women’s Volleyball Comeback Attempt Shut Down by Bulldogs

FRANKLIN, M.A. - The New England College women's volleyball team dropped a five-set match at Dean College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday at Pieri Gymnasium in Franklin, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College: 2, Dean College: 3 (Set scores: 19-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 10-15)
Records: Pilgrims: 8-12, 4-7 GNAC | 7-10, 3-3 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set started with back-and-forth action, as the Pilgrims were able to take advantage of Bulldogs errors to make it 7-7. After three kills from junior outside hitter Lily-Anne Heywood (Derry, N.H.), the Grims were able to get within one at 12-11. The Pilgrims made some errors as that pushed the score to 18-11 before a Dean service error. The Bulldogs never looked back as they took the set 25-19.
  • The second set continued with an even pace as sophomore middle-blocker Jamie Hansen (New Underwood, S.D.) registered two kills in a run where both teams were within three points of another. After back-to-back kills from graduate middle-blocker Tatiana Sampson (Kailua, Hawaii) and junior middle-blocker Kaylee Montgomery (Weare, N.H.), the Pilgrims relied on Bulldogs errors to tie the set at 24, before losing the next two points to drop the set.
  • Sophomore outside-hitter Savannah Pilialoha (Waipahu, Hawaii) and Heywood combined for seven kills as the Pilgrims went up 14-12 in the third set. Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Winters (Dover, N.H.) scored a kill to tie the set at 17. Junior setter Aurora Gutierrez-Macias (El Paso, Tex.) took over the serve up 22-21 and scored an ace to put the Grims within two points of tying the set. After Emily Ball scored two straight kills to get within one at 24-23, Pilialoha slammed one down to force a fourth set.
  • Freshman right-side hitter Victoria Barragan (El Paso, Tex.) entered the match with an immediate kill as Heywood and Pilialoha shared kills until NEC went up 23-21. Barragan scored another kill before the Bulldogs committed a service error to finish the fourth and force a fifth and final set.
  • The fifth set included back-to-back kills from Winters as the Pilgrims weren't able to catch up to Dean as they took the fifth set 15-10.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Heywood led the match with 16 kills, with Pilialoha close behind with 13 to combine for 29 of the 51 total kills for the Grims.
  • Montgomery, Heywood, and Pilialoha all combined for six of NEC's seven blocks, with two apiece.
