Baseball Rallies to Doubleheader Sweep of Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINCHESTER, Mass. - The New England College baseball team swept conference foe Eastern Nazarene College in dramatic fashion in Winchester, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.

Game 1:
Score: New England College 4, Eastern Nazarene College 3
Records: Pilgrims 10-18, 1-6 NECC | Lions 23-7, 5-4 NECC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Eastern Nazarene College jumped ahead early in game one with three runs in the first inning, looking to pick up right where they left off after taking both games at NEC two weeks ago. However, the Pilgrims had different plans.
  • Still a 3-0 ballgame entering the fifth, the 'Grims started the inning with a pair of walks by junior catcher JD Normand (Auburn, N.H.) and junior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) Normand would score on a double to left field by freshman outfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.). After an ENC error and an RBI groundout by senior infielder Devin Parsons (Salisbury, Mass.), both Patnode and Cote would score to tie the game up at 3-3.
  • In the sixth, the stage was once again set for Cote following two NEC walks, and the freshman delivered. Cote doubled to left field, scoring sophomore shortstop Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) to give the 'Grims the 4-3 lead.
  • With just a one run lead, the Pilgrims turned to senior Tim Krol (East Longmeadow, Mass.) in relief. Krol induced a flyout and then struck out five straight Lions to earn the six-out-save and secure the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC starting pitcher Wyatt Cameron (Salisbury, Vt.) went five innings, allowing three earned runs and six walks while striking out four. The senior recovered after a shaky first inning and blanked the Lions over his last four innings and came away with the win.
  • ENC starter Francis Ferguson (Jefferson, Mass.) took the loss while throwing six innings and allowing four runs (two earned) with five strikeouts.

Game 2:
Score: New England College 5, Eastern Nazarene College 2
Records: Pilgrims 11-18, 2-6 NECC | Lions 23-8, 5-5 NECC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams struggled to find offense early in the second half of the doubleheader, but the 'Grims would change that in the fourth inning when Normand hit a home run to straightaway center field to take the 1-0 lead.
  • That lead would not last long as the Lions would finally get to NEC starter Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off infield singles to take the 2-1 advantage.
  • NEC would immediately bounce back in the sixth inning as senior outfielder Luca Giallongo (Mt. Shasta, Calif.) singled, and following a Philibotte walk and Normand single, Giallongo would score the tying run after Patnode was hit by a pitch. After both teams pressed in the seventh but failed to score, the game would go to extra innings.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, the 'Grims produced a pair of two-out baserunners after a Patnode single and a walk by junior infielder Lachlan Rees (Adelaide, Australia). With two on and two outs, head coach Terry Doyle turned to the bench and sent pinch hitter Sylvain Audet (Springfield, Mass.) to the plate. Audet turned on one and hit a huge three-run home run to deep left field, driving in the eventual game winning runs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC's Hazzard pitched well for the 'Grims, allowing just two earned runs over seven strong innings with seven punch-outs, and earning the win. Sophomore Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.) would earn the save following a clean eighth inning.
  • ENC's starting pitcher Morgan Weast (Cincinatti, Ohio.) threw seven and two-thirds innings with four earned runs and eleven strikeouts while taking the loss.
  • Giallongo went four-for-four with a walk in game two and reached base seven times between the two games.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday, when they travel to Plymouth State University for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
  • Eastern Nazarene College plays their next game at Tufts on Tuesday, set to start at 6:00 PM.
