Women’s Soccer Wins in Thriller over Albertus Magnus

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's soccer team held on for a strong win against visiting Albertus Magnus College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on a rainy Saturday at the Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: Albertus Magnus 3, New England College 4
Records: Falcons 6-5-5, 5-5-4 GNAC | Pilgrims 4-11-1, 4-10-0 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the 25th minute, freshman forward Ashleigh Carolus (Lakewood, Co.) fought off a couple of defenders to send a pass in front of the net. Junior forward Shelby McBain (Indianhead, Md.) beat the goalkeeper to the ball and sneaked it into the goal to take the lead.
  • In the 58th minute, the 'Grims were threatening around midfield when sophomore midfielder Brianna Delandes (Westfield, Vt.) poked a pass to McBain who found enough space to launch a rocket towards the opposition's net. With some serious power behind it, the shot ricocheted off the top crossbar and down
  • Now in the 67th minute, McBain drew a foul inside the Falcon's penalty box, granting the team a penalty shot and a chance to grow its lead to three. It was Catie Wheeler (Benton City, Wash.) who stepped up to take the shot, and she would deliver. The senior defender would net her first career goal, sending the ball into the left side of the net – scoring with ease – to put NEC up 3-0.
  • But the Falcons would not go away. Albertus Magnus would add goals in the 75th and 76th minutes, with scores coming from seniors Erina Ismaili (Middlebury, Conn.) and Sophie Vescera (Prospect, Conn.), respectively.
  • With the lead reduced to one, in the 77th minute the 'Grims would waste no time adding another as a McBain corner would connect with graduate midfielder Reese Hultgren (Charlton, Mass.) for a right-footed volley into the back of the net to push their lead back to two.
  • Albertus Magnus would again make the game interesting as in the 85th minute as Vescera would score her second goal of the game.
  • Now up 4-3, the 'Grims would come up big defensively for the final five-plus minutes to hold on and secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Pilgrims' sophomore goalkeeper Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) made 10 saves in the win.
  • The Falcons goalie duo of Emma Devico and Amy Stevens combined to stop 7 shots.
  • After the two-goal effort, McBain now leads the team with four goals on the season.
