NECC Baseball Tournament Preview

NEW LONDON, Conn. The New England College baseball team will be competing in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) postseason tournament. Four teams from the conference will be competing starting Friday, May 7th down at Mitchell College. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the Division III baseball tournament later this month. The Mariners lead the tournament as they face off against Becker College at 9:30 am. While the Pilgrims take on Elms College at 12:30 pm, following the previous contest.

# 1 Mitchell College
THE SEASON TO THIS POINT
Record: 21-6 (14-2 NECC) 12-4 at home, 9-2 on the road, 0-0 at neutral site
-The Mariners earned the top seed entering the playoff tournament.
-Entering Championship weekend, the Mariners won their last two games against Elms College to come in with an eight-game win streak.
-Their two NECC losses came from NEC and Becker after both teams were able to split the Mariners in doubleheaders.
-Mitchell has crossed the plate 293 times this season. They also add 27 homeruns on the season.

PLAYOFF HISTORY
2016: wins over Lesley University (10-5) and Southern Vermont College (21-7, 14-8) gave Mitchell the NECC Championship. They dropped their NCAA Regional game to Tufts (8-1) before eliminating Eastern Connecticut State (3-2). They did fall in heartbreaking fashion to Salem State (3-2 12 innings).
2017: started with a loss to Lesley University (5-4) before eliminating Becker College (21-2) and Elms College (9-4) before falling to Lesley University (10-6).
2018: wins over Becker College (7-3) and Lesley twice (15-6, 7-4) gave the Mariners the NECC Championship. However, they fell to Keystone (3-2 11 innings) before downing Suffolk (9-3). They were eliminated from the NCAA DIII New England Regional by Ramapo (6-0) in their third game.

2019: Took two games from Eastern Nazarene (6-1, 4-3) before losing both games to New England College (5-0, 2-1)

#2 New England College
THE SEASON TO THIS POINT
Record: 15-13 (13-3 NECC) 7-2 at home, 8-11 on the road, 0-0 at neutral site
-The Pilgrims secured the second-seed headed into the NECC playoffs.
-They head into championship weekend on a four-game win streak after sweeping Becker College at home on Senior Day.
-Their longest win streak came in the middle of the season when they won six consecutive contests against Keene State, Elms College, and Mitchell College.

PLAYOFF HISTORY
2016: did not qualify
2017: wins over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (11-8) and Husson University (8-5) put the Pilgrims straight to the NAC Championship. However, Castleton won two games (9-3, 7-6) in the NAC Championship to win the NAC.
2018: loss to Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (6-5) to put them in loser's bracket before bouncing back to eliminate University of Maine-Farmington (12-0) and Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (11-2). The Pilgrims and Castleton University met for the second-straight year in the NAC Championship. The Spartans won 22-5.

2019: Swept through the NECC Playoffs (Lesley 5-2, Mitchell 5-0, Mitchell 2-1), before defeating Southern Maine (10-2), MIT (6-5). They dropped a 16-4 game to Southern Maine, before turning around and winning 7-6 in 13 innings. In the Super Regional at UMass Boston, NEC lost the first game 5-4, before winning game two 6-4. The Pilgrims fell in the decisive game three 6-2.

#3 Elms College
THE SEASON TO THIS POINT

Record: 8-12 (8-12 NECC) 5-5at home, 3-7 on the road, 0-0 at neutral site
-The Blazers made the NECC Playoff tournament as the third-seed, Elms only competed in conference play this past season.
-Elms enters the tournament with 110 runs on the season and 131 strikeouts from the Blazers pitching staff on the season.
-In NECC play, the Blazer split with Lesley University, swept by NEC, split Becker College, split Eastern Nazarene College, and was swept by Mitchell College.

#4 Becker College
THE SEASON TO THIS POINT
Record: 6-16 (6-10 NECC) 3-5 at home, 3-10 on the road, 0-1 at neutral site
-The Hawks enter the playoff season ranked fourth after falling short to the Pilgrims this past weekend.
-Becker saw their first conference wins against Lesley after beating them at home, then splitting with the Lynx on the road.

-The Hawks also contributed to one of the only losses that the Mariners faced this season in conference play, beating them 12-8 in seven innings on the road.
-Becker College have tallied 117 runs and have struck out 157 of their opponents this point in the season.
