Baseball Spilts NECC Doubleheader with Becker

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCHDALE, Mass. The New England College baseball team split their New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) doubleheader with Becker College on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One New England College 17, Becker 2
The Pilgrims struck first in the top of the second inning. Christian Aybar came to the plate with the bases loaded and tripled to left field to give the Pilgrims a 2-0 lead. Anderson Jimenez was called out at home, trying to score from first base. Luis Atiles managed to get Aybar home after getting in a rundown which gave the Pilgrims a 3-0 lead. Becker got on the board on a Willis Pollard single. Daniel Diaz scored on a throwing error on the play.

NEC tallied four runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-1. Jimenez hit an RBI single to left center field which scored Jeam Castillo. A sacrifice fly by Aybar plated Shane McNamara and a two-run single by Evan Delaney capped off the inning. The Pilgrims continued to plate runs as they added four more in the top of the fifth inning. Aybar walked with the bases loaded before Atiles doubled, which drove in two runs. Connor Morin drove in two more runs with a two-run single. William Negron got Becker back on the board with an RBI double to right center.

Five more runs would score in the final two innings for the Pilgrims as the Joe Maestu reached base on an error which allowed two runs to score. Aybar reached on an error to score Maestu. Delaney recorded his team-leading fourth homerun of the season in the top of the seventh inning.

Stanley Vargas earned his third win of the season after pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed three hits and two runs, one earned while striking out four batters. Colby Howe came on in relief throwing one inning.

Game Two Becker 3, New England College 2
Becker got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff double by Colby Hussey. Noah Rivera doubled down the left field line to score Hussey from second. The Pilgrims loaded the bases in the top of the second. Clifford Guerrero earned a walk which brought Delaney across the plate. However, the Pilgrims were unable to add any more runs as the next three batters put balls in play but outs were recorded.

The Pilgrims earned a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning after Atiles doubled to left center field to leadoff the inning and advanced on a Morin foul out. Delaney's flyout was deep enough to score Atiles. Neither team could muster any offense through the remainder of the third inning and the fourth inning but the Pilgrims loaded the bases again in the fifth inning but did not capitalize on the opportunity as the Becker pitching struck out the last two batters of the inning.

The Hawks earned a base runner in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mel Gonzalez advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kevin Santiago scored from second on a single through the left side to tie the contest. Santiago then stole second before Ben Mazzone was hit by a pitch. Colby Hussey earned the walkoff win for the Hawks with a single to left field scoring Santiago from second.

Jameson Carey is 2-2 on the season after throwing 6.2 innings. Carey gave up five hits and three runs, one earned while striking out nine batters.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-This was the sixth meeting and seventh meetings all-time. The Pilgrims were 0-5 against the Hawks before today.
-The Pilgrims have tallied double-digit runs in 11 contests this season. They are 10-1 in those games.
-Game one was the New England Collegiate Conference debut for the Pilgrims.
