HENNIKER, N.H. - Although the Pilgrims would fall in a doubleheader to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, it would be a day for the record books as graduate infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) etched himself into NEC history as the program's all-time hits leader with 155 career hits.
The team recognized a massive senior class as part of their senior day celebration, honoring Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.), David Spigel (Portsmouth, R.I.), Nick Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Isaias Nuño (Rialto, Calif.), Brendan Hill (Lincoln, R.I.), Brody McNair (Revere, Mass.), Mike Monteforte (Wilmington, Mass.), Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.), Colin Shaw (Colebrook, N.H.), Liam Shaw (Colebrook, N.H.), Noah Winship (Rochester, N.H.), Jackson Round (Cayuga, Ont.), Thomas Betsy (Hillsdale, N.J.), and Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) in between games.
Game 1 – NEC 0, CSC 8
Colby-Sawyer pushed a run across in the first inning before opening things up with a four-run fourth frame. They would add another in the fifth and two more in the seventh to secure the win. The Charger's Dylan Watson pitched a complete game, seven-inning shutout of the Pilgrims as he scattered just four hits and three walks in the win.
Philibotte singled in the fourth, tying the previous hits record held by Evan Delaney '19. Cote reached base in all three of his at-bats, walking twice and hitting a single in the sixth. On the mound, Chagnon threw his fifth complete game of the season as he sits third in the GNAC with 49.2 innings.
Game 2 – NEC 7, CSC 13
The hot-hitting Chargers, who entered the day on a six-game winning streak, kept things going in game two as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning.
NEC responded immediately as the first five Pilgrims to bat reached base safely. Philibotte singled to right field to load the bases in the first while securing the long-awaited program record with his 154th career hit. On the very next pitch, sophomore Jaken Pellerin (Manchester, N.H.) cracked a double to left field to score both Hernandez and Cote.
Philibotte would score on a failed pickoff attempt that got away from the Chargers, and Pellerin would come home on an RBI single from freshman Dillan Abbate (Port Jervis, N.Y.) as the 'Grims put up four runs in the first. They would capitalize on a three-base error in the bottom of the second to push across another run to go up, 5-3.
The Chargers would tie the game in the top of the third as NEC issued three walks and two hit-by-pitches. They would claim the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Mike McLeer before jumping ahead by three on a two-run home run off the bat of Evan Dennis. Colby-Sawyer would add three more runs in the top of the sixth, using a walk and three consecutive singles to take complete control.
With the lead up to eight in the bottom of the ninth, the Pilgrims put together a late rally as Philibotte tallied hit number 155 to drive in both Hernandez and Cote before the Chargers closed the door on a 13-7 final.
Pellerin totaled three doubles in the nightcap as he went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Cote had the team's other extra-base hit with a double in the seventh as the senior went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. In conference play, Cote continues to lead the GNAC in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
The Pilgrims are back in action on Tuesday as they head to Standish, Maine as they face Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a GNAC doubleheader starting at 2:00 PM.
