Box Score LYNDON, Vt. The New England College Baseball team split their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader against Lyndon State on Wednesday afternoon with a game one victory by a 9-3 score but a loss in game two, 5-4.
The Pilgrims are now 17-7 on the season with a 6-4 record in the NAC while Lyndon goes to 7-11 overall with a 3-1 record in the NAC.
GAME ONE: NEC 9, LYNDON 3
The Pilgrims struck first when Luis Atiles (Dorchester, Mass.) came around to score on a ball put in play by
Manuel Andujar (West New York, N.Y.). The Hornets would rally home two runs of their own in their half of the second inning. The Pilgrims would strike for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. A pair of Atiles and Andujar walks and a single by
Nick Powers (Malden, Mass.) would load the bases.
John Prentice (Saugus, Mass.),
Christian Aybar (Pawtucket, R.I.), and Xavier Nunez (Lawrence, Mass.) would all put balls in play to give the Pilgrims a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hornets would add a run to close the gap but an Andujar double in the top of the fifth to open the game to a 6-3. The Pilgrims added insurance in the top of the seventh inning when Powers homered and Nunez drove in two more runs.
Jameson Carey (Amherst, Mass.) would throw the complete game, his third of the season. He gave up 10 hits over the seven inning contest, allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out four. He is now 5-2 on the season.
GAME TWO: LYNDON 5, NEC 4
Game two saw the Pilgrims fall behind the Hornets 5-0 by the end of the second inning. Manuel Alejandro (East Hartford, Conn.) would close the gap by driving in Atiles. Andujar would continue his hot day by putting a ball in play and reaching on an error, allowing
Stanley Vargas (Boston, Mass.) to score and cut the lead to 5-2 halfway through the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth, Andujar would double, bringing in two more RBI and closing the gap to one in the closing innings. The Pilgrims were unable to capitalize on the bases loaded opportunity after the double.
Jeam Castillo (Lynn, Mass.) was only able to get through 1.0 innings in the losing effort. He is now 1-2 on the season. Sean Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) would be the only reliever the Pilgrims would use, throwing 5.0 innings and only allowing four hits during his outing.
