Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. The New England College Baseball team dropped a tightly contested battle with Eastern Mennonite University on Monday morning, 2-1, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
With the loss, the Pilgrims are 1-2 on the season while the Royals improve to 9-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilgrims struck first in the top of the second inning. Luis Atiles (Dorchester, Mass.) found his way on base with a single.
Nick Powers (Malden, Mass.) found an opening with a single through the right side. Manny Alejandro (East Hartford, Conn.) drove a pitch to right field for a single, but it was deep enough to get Atiles around from second to give the Pilgrims the early 1-0 lead.
The Royals battled back to strike for two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Wilcher (Staunton, Va.) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. He put a ball into left center field for a two RBI single. Those runs would be all the Royals needed.
The Pilgrims best chance to strike back came in the sixth inning with two men on base but ultimately couldn't capitalize.
Jake Scanlan (Charlestown, Mass.) made his first career start in the contest. He threw for 6.0 innings giving up eight hits and striking out three.
