Box Score FLEMINGTON, N.J. The New England College Baseball team kept their offense rolling after earning 12 hits on their way to a 17-7 victory over the Cyclones of Centenary University on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Pilgrims will improve to 7-3 on the season while the Cyclones will fall to 3-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilgrims were looking to earn a sweep over the Cyclones during their three game set in New Jersey. After their two wins yesterday, the Pilgrims looked as if they were just as hot as they put three runs on the board in the top of the first. The Pilgrims strung some hits together and capitalized on Cyclone errors to extend their lead to 5-0. Evan Delaney (Hadley, Mass.) went 2-for-2 in the first two innings, with two runs scored and three stolen bases.
The Pilgrims were met with some resistance as the third inning came around. A three-run homerun by Tim Maxwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) would cut the lead to two. The Pilgrims would get their lead back to four after a Manuel Alejandro (East Hartford, Conn.) sacrifice fly to center field. The Cyclones would rally in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to
two once again after stringing together a double, triple, and a single in the inning.
Stanley Vargas (Boston, Mass.) would stretch the Pilgrim lead to four after he would respond with a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth.
Christian Aybar (Pawtucket, R.I.) would put the game nearly out of reach when he hit his team leading third homerun of the season. Aybar's three-run homerun marks his third in as many games. The Pilgrims would continue to capitalize on their opportunities to get runs across the board.
Jake Scanlan (Charlestown, Mass.) would earn his first career win in the contest after he threw 5.0 innings, giving up five runs on 11 hits. Scalan is now 1-1 in his freshman
season.
