Women's Basketball Picks Up First Win of the Season, Downs Delaware Valley

Box Score GALLOWAY, N.J. - The New England College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2017-18 season with a 66-62 win over Delaware Valley University.

With the win NEC improves to 1-0 on the season, while Delaware Valley falls to 0-2.

NEC LEADERS
The Pilgrims received a game-high 18 points from Kourtney Elmore (Concord, N.C.). She earned 23 minutes, coming off the bench. Elmore was 8 of 13 shooting and 2 of 3 from beyond the three-point arc.

NEC also received double digit point performances from Jada Black (Concord, N.C.) with 12 points and Jocelyn Vien (Pittsfield, N.H.) with 10 points.

Black finished with a game-high nine rebounds, one short of a double-double. Haleigh Martin (Bergenfield, N.J.) had a game-high four assists.

DELAWARE VALLEY LEADERS
Delaware Valley received double digit point performances from four players. Ashley Smink lead the Aggies with 13 points. Olivia Gorman, Danielle Skedzielewski, and Lauren Moretti finished with 12, 11, and 10 points reach respectively.

Gorman finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter came to a close with NEC leading 18-14. The Aggies scored the first points of the contest but the NEC offense overpowered Delaware Valley and at one point had opened up a five-point lead late in the first quarter. Six of Elmore's 18 came in the first.

The second quarter ended with neither team gaining an advantage. NEC still held a four-point lead heading into the half. Both teams managed to put 14 points on the board. Vien put up her first four points of the contest and the season in the second quarter.

Delaware Valley came out of the half shooting better than they did in the previous two quarters and it showed on the scoreboard as the Pilgrims held the narrowest of leads, one point, heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter saw the Pilgrims finish with at 57.1% shooting, their best quarter of the contest while Delaware valley had their worst at 25%. Early in the fourth, the Aggies found themselves leading by one point. Elmore added a three-point field goal midway through the quarter to cap off an 11-1 run and give the Pilgrims a 10-point lead. Elmore would hit her second three-point field goal nearly three minutes later to keep a significant Pilgrim advantage.

The Pilgrims will play against Stockton University on Sunday at 3 p.m. to determine the champion of the Tip-Off Tournament.
