WATERVILLE, Maine. - The New England College women's rugby team played three games at Thomas College, including a 27-17 victory against Nichols College, a 38-15 loss to Thomas College, and finally a domination of the University of Maine-Farmington, 45-0.
In the first match against Nichols, the Pilgrims were dominant from the opening kickoff. Junior Mary-Hanna Sargent (Weymouth, Mass.) led the scoring with three tries. Freshman Keira Marling (Georgetown, Ont.) and graduate Karime Camarena-Tejeda (Miami, Fla.) each also fought for a try.
In the second battle of the day, the offense of Thomas College exploded in the first half to take a 24-0 lead over NEC heading into the intermission. The 'Grims found some offensive groove in the final half of the game, as they scored three tries, including two from Sargent and one from junior Savin Ericson (Portsmouth, N.H.).
After having a whole hour off before the final match of the day, the Pilgrims had their best game of the morning, as they were very efficient with possession. NEC ended the match with a total of seven tries, including one where Marling stole the ball from the Beavers and took it nearly all the way across the entire field for five points. Sargent added four more tries to her clinical performance Sunday, while freshman Emma Malarkey (Stoneham, Mass.) and Ericson each recorded a try.
The Pilgrims battled offensively throughout the morning, as a total of 15 tries were completed. Malarkey went six for 15 on conversions.
NEC returns home next Saturday, October 3rd to host a jamboree against Thomas, Nichols, and Bryant University, starting at 10 AM.
