Men’s Golf Wins NEC Spring Invitational

MANCHESTER, N.H. - By way of a three-way tiebreaker, the New England College men's golf team won the NEC Spring Invitational hosted at Derryfield Country Club in Manchester, New Hampshire in the Pilgrims' final tune-up before the NCAA Championships in May.

The 'Grims found themselves tied with both Suffolk University and the University of Southern Maine, all sitting with team scores of 305 after 18 holes. The tiebreaker would go to each team's fifth highest scorer with senior Graham Hassan (Pinckney, Mich.) beating out Suffolk's Tyler Anastasi by nine strokes with an 83 (+13) to give NEC the victory.

Sophomore Bryce Sturm (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had the best day for the Pilgrims, leading the team with a 73 (+3) to finish tied for fourth overall. Sturm had a strong finish, netting birdies on two of the final three holes on his way to a 35 (-1) on the back nine.

Finishing two strokes behind Sturm was freshman Emil Elias (Ekerö, Sweden) who placed tied for sixth overall with a 75 (+5) in an overall solid day for the rookie. He shot a team-best 36 (+2) on the front nine.

NEC sophomore Dalton Gordon (Boscawen, N.H.) finished in eighth place with a steady 77 (+7). He shot a 38 (+4) on the front with two birdies while wrapping up the back nine with a 39 (+3). Fellow sophomore Vesse-Wincent Lampen (Espoo, Finland) turned in an 80 (+10) en route to a 12th place finish.

Playing as an individual, freshman Shane Helman (Parma, Ohio) had a good day as the rookie tied for 12th overall with an 80 (+10). Junior Jack Herron (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) shot an 85 (+15) as he also competed as an individual.

The Pilgrims will now look ahead to the NCAA Championships which will be held in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida from May 12th to May 15th. This year marks the third straight season in which the Pilgrims will face off against the best teams around the country.
