Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Drops Defensive Battle with Blazers

HENNIKER, N.H. - Sophomore Luke Montejo (Tewksbury, Mass.) had a game-high 15 points on Tuesday night as the New England College men's basketball team fell in a low-scoring affair with Elms College.

The Pilgrims jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first three minutes of the game, capped by a three-pointer by senior Kenray Emadamerho (Manchester, N.H.). Elms responded by taking the lead about four minutes later and would not concede it for the remainder of the game.

Offense was tough to come by in the first half as both teams shot below 40 percent from the field and 18 percent from three-point range. The Blazers seized a 34-22 lead going into halftime, capitalizing on NEC's 14 turnovers to Elms' four. Montejo had seven first-half points as the 'Grims were desperate for offense going into the break.

The Blazers led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but the Pilgrims defense kept it within reach for most of the game. Montejo pulled them within 11 with a three-point play with six minutes left, a lead that would go as low as 10 after some Pilgrim-made free throws.

Elms managed to muster up enough offense to keep the 'Grims from getting within single digits during the second half, finding well-timed baskets to counter any Pilgrim scoring runs. The Blazers would hold on for the 62-51 win.

The low-scoring matchup saw the Blazers shoot 35.8 percent from the floor and 20.0 percent from deep, while the Pilgrims shot just 35.6 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. NEC ended the game with 21 turnovers to Elms' eight.

Montejo had his game-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting while also leading the 'Grims with eight rebounds and two blocks. Junior Mike Strazzeri (Chichester, N.H.) was the only other Pilgrim in double figures with 11 points and four boards. Junior Aiden MacLeod (Wilmington, Mass.) chipped in eight points and five rebounds while sophomore Jayden Welch (Lynn, Mass.) scored an efficient six points in 13 minutes of action.

The Pilgrims will now hit the road again on Saturday as they face off against Regis College on Higgins Court in Weston, Massachusetts at 1:00 PM.
