PLYMOUTH, N.H. - For the second time this season, the New England College field hockey team came out on the wrong side of a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss in non-conference play, falling to Plymouth State early Wednesday evening.
Both teams put five shots on net in the first half, but it was the Panthers who converged off a Pilgrim turnover late in the second quarter and converted a fast-break chance into the game's first goal with 4:01 left in the first half.
With 7:06 left in the third quarter, the Pilgrims would tie the game off a penalty corner; Senior Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) sent a pass from the top of the arc to senior Tatum Golis (New Hartford, N.Y.) in front of the Panthers' goalkeeper; Golis, in one quick motion, turned and ripped a shot between the goalie's legs and into the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
Midway through the fourth, the Panthers had their best opportunity of the second half in search of the go-ahead score, but the fast break was snuffed out by a great defensive recovery from sophomores Jaylen Marsh (Methuen, Mass.) and Kennedy Overhoff (Whitefield, N.H.).
The NEC offense was granted a penalty corner with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and another one 10 seconds later. On the second corner, sophomore Kira Geddes (Bow, N.H.) fired in a shot from just inside the arc, but the hot shot was saved by the Panthers' keeper and sent the game to overtime tied at 1-1.
Around the four-minute mark of the first overtime period, a fumbled reception on an NEC penalty corner quickly turned into a Plymouth State fast break. The Panthers sent a pass up to Ellie Monahan behind the NEC defense and Monahan buried the game-winner.
Senior Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) started and made four saves in 30 minutes of action. In relief of Anderson, junior Annie Raduazzo (Amherst, N.H.) recorded one save. Plymouth State goalkeeper Natalie Merrick was busy all game long, facing 16 shots on goal and making 15 saves.
NEC will head to West Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, September 27th, for an important GNAC matchup against the USJ Blue Jays.
