WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The New England College Field Hockey team shut out the University of Saint Joseph, 2-0 on Saturday to jump to 6-3 on the season and 4-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
The Pilgrims had a chance early off of a penalty corner from junior Kacey McClay (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and a shot from senior Tatum Golis (New Hartford, N.Y.) with no result. The Blue Jays got two shots on goal that were saved by Pilgrims senior goalie Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.).
The Pilgrims got a chance to score late in the second quarter when they drew a penalty stroke. After an unsuccessful attempt, McClay was able to bury a goal a minute and a half later to give NEC a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
After a penalty corner for the Blue Jays and a shot on goal from NEC sophomore Kira Geddes (Bow, N.H.), USJ's Grace Kociszewski drew her first of two yellow cards with no answer from the Pilgrims. Anderson and the Pilgrims continued to deny chances from the Blue Jays as NEC took a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Pilgrims kept their foot on the gas as they got shot after shot off until Geddes was able to find the back of the net with just 4:24 to go in the game as the score held up and the Pilgrims won.
Geddes, McClay, and senior Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) combined for seven shots on goal as Anderson finished with nine saves on the afternoon.
