THE BASICS
Score: New England College 6, Lasell University 16
Records: Pilgrims 5-8, 3-4 GNAC | Lasers 8-4, 4-3 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter of play proved to be a stagnant outing for the 'Grims as the team was unable to produce any offense while the Lasers managed to get things going on their end. LU claimed a three-goal lead to cap off the first quarter that would place NEC in a predicament they would need to get out of. LU's momentum would continue going into the second quarter as the Lasers kept finding ways to score, tacking on an additional three goals that stretched the hosts lead out to six. Even with the NEC's back against the wall, they managed to make the most out of their situation as the final LU goal was scored at 6:38, NEC began to make an attempt to climb back into the game.
- NEC with the time remaining took care of the ball on the offensive end of the field and found the back of the net on two different occasions with them both coming from sophomore midfielder Carmela Goodwin (Lebanon, N.H.) that helped put a dent into the deficit shortening it by four goals going into halftime.
- Just when things seemed to begin to favor the 'Grims as they entered into the third quarter, LU began to put their foot on the gas as they were able to correct the mistakes they made in the previous quarter. Which created some havoc that caused NEC some difficulties as the Lasers went on a 4-0 run that proved to be costly with the 'Grims finding themselves behind by eight goals with 2:41 left in the quarter, 10-2. In the end, NEC would find a way to bounce back and continue to fight by making the most out of the opportunities that presented themselves with the time remaining as they netted the final three goals of the quarter thanks to Goodwin, junior attacker Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.), and graduate midfielder Annalisa Crooks (Nantucket, Mass.), 10-5 still favoring the Lasers.
- For the vast majority of the final quarter of action, LU still managed to continue their onslaught on offense scoring four straight continuing to apply the pressure that would prove to be overwhelming for the 'Grims to come back from as there would only be 4:42 left, 14-5. All NEC was able to muster up was one goal that shortly was responded to by the Lasers who tacked on two more goals to assure their victory on the evening over the 'Grims, 16-6.
