HENNIKER, N.H. - Freshman pitcher Amanda Magro (Phoenix, Ariz.) of the New England College softball team has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on April 6th, in an announcement by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Magro had an incredible week on the mound for the Pilgrims, going 2-0 with wins against Mass Maritime and Anna Maria. She totaled 12 scoreless innings pitched, allowing just four hits and zero walks while striking out nine. The rookie provided five clean innings of long-relief against the Bucs on Tuesday as the Pilgrims emerged with a 6-2 victory. On Friday, Magro started game one of a doubleheader against Anna Maria and simply overwhelmed the AMCATS. She didn't allow her first baserunner until the fourth inning and kept her opponents from advancing past second base the entire game. Magro recorded a season-high seven punchouts en route to her second win of the week.
In her freshman season, Magro has found a lot of success both as a hitter and a pitcher, but where she has really excelled has been on the mound. Magro leads the GNAC with a microscopic 2.03 ERA, nearly half a run better than the next lowest qualified pitcher. Among all players with at least 40 innings pitched, Magro has allowed the second least hits and third fewest walks. Her 1.48 WHIP ranks fifth in the conference.
After a sweep of Anna Maria on Friday, Magro and the 'Grims will take a 2-0 North Division record into a home doubleheader against Norwich on Tuesday. Game one of the team's home opener will begin at 2:00 PM from Old Concord Road field.
