RINDGE, N.H. – The New England College baseball team earned a come-from-behind, walk-off win over Dean College on Tuesday in a home game played at Pappas Field on the campus Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
THE BASICS
Score: Dean College 8, New England College 9
Records: Bulldogs 6-23, 3-9 GNAC | Pilgrims 7-17, 4-5 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pilgrims struggled through a rainy top of the first, conceding three runs to the Bulldogs before graduate catcher Aaron Robertson (Weare, N.H.) gunned down an attempted base stealer to end the inning. Robertson would throw out three Bulldogs attempting to steal second in the first three innings.
- NEC loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on a walk and two hit batsmen, but an inning-ending double play got Dean out of the jam unscathed.
- Dean led off the fourth inning with a double slicing down the right field line. Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to right field, advancing to second on a fielding error. Senior pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) retired three straight Bulldogs to limit the damage.
- In the bottom half of the frame, freshman Jaken Pellerin (Manchester, N.H.) led off with a hard-hit single through the left side. Two batters later, Pellerin would advance to third on a double by junior outfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) down the left field line. The 'Grims would take advantage of a Bulldogs wild pitch as Pellerin would score the team's first run of the game.
- After a 30-minute rain delay, Dean expanded their lead to 7-1 in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, the 'Grims would get both runs back after they loaded the bases and scored on a hit-by-pitch of junior outfielder Isaias Nuño (Rialto, Calif.) and a walk of Cote.
- NEC would score two more in the sixth as Cannavo drove in Robertson, followed by Pellerin belting a single to score freshman infielder Kaeden Elmer (Bedford, N.H.). The 'Grims would plate two runs for a third consecutive inning in the seventh, with Cannavo hitting a single to right center to score both Nuño and Cote to tie the game up at 7-7.
- The Bulldogs would jump ahead, 8-7, pushing across a run in the top of the eighth inning. The one run deficit would remain into the bottom of the ninth. Down to their final two outs of the game, the 'Grims would look to senior outfielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) as a pinch-hitter in the game's biggest spot. Dobrie rose to the occasion, smacking a triple to deep center field to put the tying run just 90 feet away. Three batters later, down to their final out, graduate utilityman Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) singled up the middle to score Dobrie and send the game to extra innings.
- The Pilgrims loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth inning but were unable to push across the winning run. In the eleventh, a Cannavo single, a Worth HBP, and a walk from junior infielder Yeri Ramos (Loiza, P.R.) would load the bases for Nuño with just one out. On a two-two count, Nuño sent a fly deep enough to center field to drive in Cannavo and score the game's winning run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- NEC junior Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) was credited with the win after pitching a clean top of the eleventh. Graduate Nolan Stoney (Bedford, N.H.) pitched three huge innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run with six strikeouts. Junior Brendan Hill (Lincoln, R.I.) delivered two clean innings of middle relief.
- Giambra suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, moving from third base to the mound in the tenth inning, ultimately giving up the losing run in the eleventh.
- Cannavo went 2-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Both Worth and Pellerin had two hits, one RBI and one run scored.
- Dean very narrowly outhit NEC, 12-11. NEC issued six walks to Dean's 10, while the visitors committed four errors to the Pilgrims' two.
