Softball Drops Two to Saints

Sonia Garcia
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. – The New England College softball team lost both ends of their double-header at Emmanuel College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Monday evening at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Massachusetts, losing game one, 5-1, before failing 11-1 in the nightcap. The Pilgrims run their record to 10-16 and 5-3 in GNAC action.

GAME 1 – NEC 1, EMMANUEL 5
  • The Pilgrims wasted little time getting on the board in game one. NEC junior shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) – already the school's single-season leader in walks drawn – battled her way to a 3-2 count before a fourth ball placed her at first. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) walked as well, putting two runners on for the visitors. Junior catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) then stepped to the plate and hit an RBI single to center field to drive in Giesler as the 'Grims took a 1-0 lead.
  • That would be the only run that NEC could manufacture, however, as the Pilgrims were held to just four hits by Emmanuel senior pitcher Madison Marks (Edgewater Park, N.J.) who struck out nine in seven innings.
GAME 2 – NEC 1, EMMANUEL 11
  • Game two opened much the same as the opener had, with Giesler getting on base for the 'Grims this time by virtue of a triple. Sophomore designated hitter Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) then drove in Giesler with a single, as NEC took a 1-0 lead.
  • As before, that was the only run the Pilgrims could manage.
  • Emmanuel first year pitch Lauren Peers (Franklin Square, N.Y.) pitched a gem for the Saints, allowing just one earned runs over six innings.
  • Giesler finished two-for-two with a sacrifice bunt.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday when they head up to Saint Joseph's College for a 4:00 p.m. double-header against the Monks.
  • Emmanuel plays their next game at home against Wheaton on Tuesday, that coming at 5:00 p.m.
