Women's Lacrosse Earns First Win Over Farmington

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's lacrosse team earned their first win of the season against visiting University of Maine-Farmington in non-conference action on Tuesday at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire. 

THE BASICS 
Score: University of Maine-Farmington: 15, New England College: 17 
Records: Beavers: 0-2, 0-0 NAC, Pilgrims: 1-1, 0-0 GNAC 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Beavers got off to a hot start with three straight goals to open the game. Junior midfielder Ally Trefsger (South Portland, ME) got the scoring started as junior attacker Ruby McMinis (Wells, ME) and senior midfielder Abby Trefsger (South Portland, ME) followed to put UMF up 3-0 early. The Pilgrims stormed back with three unanswered goals. Two of them were by junior attacker Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.), with one from sophomore attacker Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.). Abby Trefsger put the Beavers back in the lead before sophomore midfielder Carmela Goodwin (Lebanon, N.H.) tied it to close out the first fifteen minutes. 
  • Junior midfielder Sadie Harvey (Bethel, ME) and Ally Trefsger led the Beavers to a two-goal lead in the first five minutes of the second quarter before Goodwin and sophomore attacker Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.) stormed back to tie it up. Sophomore midfielder Emma Dunn (Farmington, ME) scored her first goal of the game before Goodwin beat the buzzer to bring it back within one at the half. 
  • McMinis and Abby Trefsger scored to bring the Beavers' lead to three before Gilchrist buried another one to bring it within two. A 3-2 run for the Pilgrims, helped by two goals from Goodwin and one from Gilchrist brought the deficit to one goal heading into the fourth quarter. Three goals each from Gilchrist and McDonald pushed the Pilgrims to their first victory of the season. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Farmington's junior goalie Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, ME) allowed 17 goals on 22 shots in the loss. 
  • Junior goalkeeper Isabella Marzano (Warwick, R.I.) made 11 saves on 26 shots to earn the win. 
  • Farmington led the game in shots on goal 26-22. 
  • Abby Trefsger led the game with 11 shots on goal. Gilchrist followed to lead the Pilgrims with nine. 
UP NEXT 
  • NEC is back on the field on Thursday when they host Thomas College at 4:00 PM. 
  • UMF plays their next game at Salem State University at noon on Saturday.
