Baseball Clipped by Elms in Conference Opener

HOLYOKE, MASS. – The New England College baseball team opened the conference slate with a narrow loss at Elms College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A pitching battle through five innings, the hometown Blazers managed to break through in the bottom of the sixth with two runs with the biggest hit coming on an RBI double from Camron Watkins (East Haddam, Conn.)
  • NEC would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Elms would force sophomore Nick Becker (Portland, Maine) to fly out to left field to end the inning.
  • Elms would add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a four-run lead into the top of the ninth. The 'Grims would put two runners on base in the ninth, but the Blazers would escape unscathed to take the conference opener, 4-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Henry Rondon (Ansonia, Conn.) picked up the win for Elms, throwing seven scoreless innings. He allowed five hits and six walks while striking out four. Colby Arnold (Waterford, Conn.) pitched two clean innings of relief to earn the save.
  • NEC senior pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) delivered seven strong innings for the 'Grims, allowing two earned runs on five hits and just one free pass. Hazzard punched out eight Blazers en route to his first quality start of the season.
  • Watkins carried the Blazer offense going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
  • junior infielder Yeri Ramos (Loiza, P.R.) reached base four times for the 'Grims.
  • NEC was issued eight walks to just two for Elms. The Pilgrims also played a clean game in the field with zero errors committed to the Blazers' one.
  • The 'Grims grounded into four double plays and the team's 13 baserunners LOB became the game's recurring theme.

UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field tomorrow as they continue GNAC play against Anna Maria College at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts at 12:00 PM.
  • Elms plays their next game on Tuesday as they host GNAC foe Johnson & Wales at 12:00 PM.
