Baseball Bounces Back at AMCATS

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.– The New England College baseball team snapped out of their five-game losing streak with a resounding 18-7 victory at Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Sunday at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score:                  New England College 18, Anna Maria 7
Records:              Pilgrims 4-11, 1-1 GNAC | AMCATS 10-7, 0-1 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 'Grims exploded out of the gate in the top of the first inning, posting six runs in the opening frame. After NEC graduate first baseman Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) lead off the game with a double, freshman third baseman Jaken Pellerin (Manchester, N.H.) drew a walk to give the visitors runners at first and second with one out. That set the table for junior designated hitter Yeri Ramos (Loiza, P.R.), who hit his second triple of the season to drive Cannavo and Pellerin in, putting the Pilgrims up 2-0. Two batters later, junior centerfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) hit an RBI double, plating a third run. Two batters later, sophomore catcher Mike Monteforte (Wilmington, Mass.) hit a two-RBI single to increase the lead to five. Finally, two batters later, senior outfielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) scored off a failed pickoff throw, giving NEC a commanding 6-0 lead.
  • The visitors would never trail, as the game was called after seven innings due to the ten-run rule.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC graduate pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.) improved to 2-2 on the season, allowing just two earned runs through six innings with four strikeouts.
  • NEC freshman second baseman Max Francisco (Hudson, N.H.) went four-for-five at the plate with three RBI, a walk and three runs scored in breakout day for the rookie.
  • Cannavo had four hits with a walk, driving in two runs.
  • Monteforte posted four RBI on the day, his first four ever as a Pilgrim.
  • Ramos finished with three hits and three runs batted in.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Tuesday when they travel to the University of Saint Joseph for a 3:00 p.m. game.
  • Anna Maria plays their next game at home against Rivier, that also on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
