Baseball Dealt Doubleheader Sweep by Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The New England College baseball team sustained a pair of losses to a strong Colby College team on Sunday who entered the day with just one loss on the season. The Mules were dominant in game one before earning a come-from-behind victory in game two, to claim both ends of the doubleheader from Coombs Field in Waterville, Maine.

Game 1: NEC 3, Colby 12

  • The Pilgrims got on the board first off an RBI single by junior Yeri Ramos (Loiza, P.R.) to score graduate utilityman Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) in the first inning, but the Mules would plate the next 11 runs of the game across the next four innings.
  • In the sixth, senior outfielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) hit his fourth double of the season to drive in Ramos, and Dobrie would later score on a single by graduate catcher Aaron Robertson (Weare, N.H.)
  • Colby College scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning before holding the Pilgrims scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the win in the first of two seven-inning games.

Game 2: NEC 7, Colby 8

  • A 1-1 game entering the third inning, freshman catcher Jaken Pellerin (Manchester, N.H.) continued to mash at the plate with an RBI double to drive in junior outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.). The Mules would respond with five-run burst across the third and fourth innings to re-take the lead, 6-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Mules intentionally walked Pellerin to load the bases for freshman infielder Max Francisco (Hudson, N.H.); Francisco came through with an RBI single, scoring freshman outfielder Ben Beaudoin (Meredith, N.H.). Two batters later, junior Isaias Nuño (Rialto, Calif.) worked a walk to score another run. With the bases still loaded, trailing 4-6, pinch-hitter Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) crushed a double to clear the bases and give the 'Grims a 7-6 lead.
  • After a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth inning for the hosts, sophomore Marco Zirpolo (Middleton, Mass.) provided the big hit the Mules needed; A triple to left field would score the game-tying run, and an NEC error on the relay would allow Zirpolo to score and put Colby on top, 8-7. Colby held on in the top of the seventh to edge NEC, 8-7, in game two of the doubleheader.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • In game one, senior pitcher Liam Bruskewicz (Granite Springs, N.Y.) suffered the loss while Ryan Grecco (Andover, Mass.) went five-plus innings for the win. In the nightcap, graduate pitcher Nolan Stoney (Bedford, N.H.) was dealt the loss for NEC while Colby reliever Adam Schwartz (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) pitched two and one-third hitless innings to earn the win.
  • For the Mules, both Patrick Shrake (Chicago, Ill.) and Clint Flippo (Bellevue, Wash.) had five hits between the two games. Flippo had three RBIs from the two-hole while Shrake scored three times from the leadoff spot.
  • Pellerin went 3-for-7 on the day with one walk, one RBI, and one run scored. The freshman is now batting .607 on the season with a 1.645 OPS.
  • Philibotte was limited to pinch-hitting duties today but reached base both times while driving in three runs. His 10 RBIs on the season is second most on the team behind Ramos.
