Baseball Drops Spring Break Finale to Rhode Island College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The New England College baseball team fell to Rhode Island College in the team's final game down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Thursday morning at Ebbots Field at The Ripken Experience.

THE BASICS
Score: Rhode Island Col. 28, New England College 1
Records: Anchormen 6-3 | Pilgrims 3-7

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Rhode Island College wasted little time taking complete control of the game, capitalizing on fielding errors by NEC to plate nine runs in the first, seven in the second, and two more in the third.
  • In the fourth, the 'Grims would score their only run of the day on an RBI double by junior outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.) to score freshman infielder Max Francisco (Hudson, N.H.) who had pinch-run for graduate utilityman Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) after Worth hit a double and was pulled.
  • The Anchormen added another run in both the fifth and sixth innings before exploding with another big seven-run inning in the seventh. They would score once more in the top of the ninth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • RIC's Kolbie Stellpflug (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) earned the win after seven strong innings of one-run ball for the Anchormen with four strikeouts. NEC senior pitcher Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.) suffered the loss. Sophomore pitcher Paul Foster (Billerica, Mass.) pitched four innings of solid bulk relief for the Pilgrims.
  • Francisco, who entered as a pinch runner in the fourth inning, led off the sixth with a single up the middle for his first career hit.
  • RIC outhit NEC, 26-5. 20 of their 26 hits were singles.
  • NEC struggled on the defensive end, making seven errors to Rhode Island's one.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Sunday when they travel to Waterville, Maine for a non-conference doubleheader against Colby College. First pitch of game one is set for 12:00 PM from Coombs Field.
