Men’s Ice Hockey Stuffs Eagles Again, 2-1

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's ice hockey team won 2-1 over visiting Elmira College on Saturday afternoon at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

THE BASICS
Score:                  Elmira 1, New England College 2
Records:              Soaring Eagles 11-8-1, 8-7-1 NEHC | Pilgrims 9-11-1, 8-7-1 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Soaring Eagles struck first when Elmira graduate forward Shane Haviland (Sea Girt, N.J.) scored just 6:44 into the game to put the visitors in the lead on a power play, assisted by sophomore defenseman Birch Gorman (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman defenseman Cam Lowe (Auburn, N.Y.).
  • With 1:26 to go in the first, NEC freshman forward Egor Osipik (Minsk, Belarus) – already the recipient of one NEHC Rookie of the Week accolade this season – found the equalizer with his eighth goal of the season off a power play, assisted by sophomore forward Jack Herron (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) and freshman defenseman Andrew Ralston (San Jose, Calif.). The game went into the first intermission tied at 1-1.
  • After a scoreless second period, the Pilgrims took the lead with 10:26 left in the game in dramatic fashion when NEC sophomore forward Gunnar Sibley (Monticello, Minn.) scored his second career short-handed goal and his sixth of the season, assisted by senior forward David Novotny (Boca Raton, Fla.). Despite a furious frenzy by the Eagles in the closing moments of the game, the 'Grims held fast and came away with seventh victory in their last eight games.
