Baseball Downed by UMass-Boston in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – The New England College baseball team fell in their season opener against UMass-Boston, falling to the Beacons in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Monan Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 2, UMass-Boston 17
Records: Pilgrims 0-1 | Beacons 1-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Getting the opening day nod for the 'Grims, graduate pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.) made quick work of the Beacons across the first two innings but conceded a run in the third on an RBI triple by Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.).
  • After a clean fourth frame, the fifth inning would present some challenges for NEC. UMass-Boston would push across four runs on six baserunners, with an inning-extending error allowing the hosts to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
  • NEC would get on the board in the top of the seventh with RBI doubles from both graduate utilityman Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) and graduate infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) to score the team's first two runs of the season.
  • The Beacons would bat around in the bottom of the seventh, sending 14 batters to the plate in an eight-run inning. They would score four more in the eighth to produce a final score of 17-2, Beacons.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • UMB starting pitcher Ross Dexter (Milton, Mass.) kicked off the season with five hitless innings, earning the win while striking out six and walking two.
  • Dunham suffered the loss for NEC, going four-and-two-thirds innings while allowing five runs (one earned) with four punchouts. Senior pitcher Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.) appeared in relief of Dunham while junior pitchers Isaias Nuño (Rialto, Calif.) and Thomas Betsy (Hillsdale, N.J.) each made his team-debut on the mound.
  • For the Beacons, right fielder Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) and shortstop Elliott Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) each had three hits; Gouveia had three RBIs and three runs scored while Miles added four runs batted in.
  • Both teams will look to dial in their command moving forward, as each squad had four hit batsmen in the game. For the 'Grims, seven errors also present a clear area for improvement as the season gets going.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Sunday when they travel to Reading, Massachusetts for a 1:00 PM matchup against the Bison.
  • UMass-Boston plays their next game at home against Bridgewater State on Friday at 2:30 PM.
