HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College men's soccer team defeated Mitchell College 2-0 on Saturday evening. The Pilgrims pick up their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win and improve their conference record to 2-3-1.
The Pilgrims came out strong in the opening half, immediately putting the pressure on the Mariners' defense. Senior Wyatt Flibbert (Windham, Maine) fired an early shot that was blocked and junior Chase Gurtowsky (Torrington, Conn.) followed up with a well-placed shot that was saved by Mariner's goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins. In the 15th minute, senior Noel Huliselan (Jakarta, Indonesia) connected with Gurtowsky to give the 'Grims a 1-0 lead. Both teams continued to trade chances late in the half, but neither team could convert as the Pilgrims carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The 'Grims wasted no time doubling their lead, striking less than a minute into the second half. Huliselan notched his second assist of the game, setting up Flibbert who buried a low shot past Jenkins to make it 2-0. The Mariners responded with a shot of their own, but junior Matt Guzman (San Bernadino, Calif.) made the save to keep the Mariners scoreless. Junior Erik Corbin (Marlborough, Mass.) and freshman Cooper Foster (Ashby, Mass.) each challenged the Mariners' defense with shots narrowly missing the net. The 'Grims maintained their attacking momentum, as senior Anthony Ruggiero (Hooksett, N.H.) forced a save from Jenkins with a shot on target.
The 'Grims outshot the Mariners 16-9 with 8-1 shots on target differential. Huliselan tallied two assists for the Pilgrims while Guzman played the full 90 minutes in net for the Pilgrims, recording one save. The 'Grims pick up their sixth shutout of the season with tonight's win.
The Pilgrims return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Standish, Maine to face GNAC opponent Saint Joseph's College of Maine with a 7:00 PM kickoff.
