Late Goal Lifts Monks Past Pilgrims

STANDISH, MAINE - The New England College men's soccer team fell 1-0 Tuesday evening against Saint Joseph's College of Maine.

The Monks challenged the Pilgrims' defense early, forcing junior goalkeeper Matt Guzman (San Bernadino, Calif.) to make a crucial save off a well-placed corner kick. The Monks continued to apply pressure, but Guzman stood firm in net with several key stops to keep the match scoreless. Senior Noel Huliselan (Jakarta, Indonesia) tested Monk's goalkeeper Logan Davis with a shot, but Davis responded with the save. Both teams exchanged late chances in the first half, but neither team could break through, sending the match into halftime at 0-0.

The 'Grims came out strong in the second half, continuing to press with several shots that narrowly missed the net. The teams continued to battle late in the half as senior Wyatt Flibbert (Windham, Maine) and Huliselan each tested Davis who made key saves to keep the score at 0-0. The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute as Diego Robinson found the foot of Mattheus Silva who netted the first goal of the night, giving the Monks a 1-0 lead. The home team maintained their attacking momentum, looking to double their lead, but Guzman responded with several critical saves. The Pilgrims defense held strong in the final minutes of action, blocking shots by the Monks. As time expired, the Monks would come away with the 1-0 victory.

Guzman registered 13 saves with one goal allowed while Davis tallied five saves. The Monks held a 20-11 shot differential with 14 shots on target while the Pilgrims recorded six shots on goal.

The Pilgrims continue GNAC play this week as they host Elms College on Saturday at Don Melander Field for a 3:00 PM kickoff. The game is also senior day, where the program will recognize and celebrate the contributions of its graduating student-athletes.
