Pilgrims Fall in 1-0 Battle With Monks

The New England College field hockey team fell at home on Saturday afternoon to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Saint Joseph's College of Maine 1-0.

The visiting Monks pressured the Pilgrims defense early in the opening quarter, firing back-to-back shots that were stopped by senior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.). The Monks broke through in the 7th minute, as Kienna Haley slipped a shot past Anderson to give the Monks a 1-0 lead. Junior Adelaide Kelly (Rockport, Maine) responded with a shot that was denied by Monk's goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin as the visitors carried a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Pilgrims continued to battle in the second quarter as junior Kacey McClay (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) took a penalty corner, finding senior Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) whose shot was turned away by McLaughlin. The Monks countered with a chance of their own, but Anderson came up with the save, as the Monks carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Both teams continued to battle through the third quarter, as the Monks pressured the Pilgrims with back-to-back shots on goal each stopped by Anderson. The Monks earned a penalty corner looking to extend their lead, but the Pilgrims' defense blocked the attempt. At the other end, McLaughlin stood strong, stopping a shot from sophomore Kira Geddes (Bow, N.H.) to keep the 1-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

The teams continued to battle in the final quarter as Maya Waryas fired a shot for the Monks that was denied by Anderson. NEC responded as Manzi fired back-to-back shots that were saved by McLaughlin. Geddes fired a shot that was blocked by the Monks and McClay added another attempt that was turned away by McLaughlin as the Monks came away with the 1-0 victory.

Anderson finished the afternoon with six saves while McLaughlin recorded seven.

The Pilgrims return home to conclude the regular season as they host a non-conference matchup with Endicott College on Don Melander Field with a 7:00 PM start.
