Field Hockey Falls to Dean in Double Overtime

FRANKLIN, MASS. - The New England College field hockey team suffered a second straight overtime loss on Saturday, falling to Dean College in double overtime in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Both teams entered the day at 7-1 in conference play, tied atop the GNAC standings alongside Saint Joseph's (ME). The game's first goal didn't come until nearly four minutes into the third quarter as Dean's Emma Gragen gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, junior Kacey McClay (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) inserted an NEC penalty corner and found senior Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) at the top of the arc. Manzi fired in a hot shot that went right back to McClay who deposited a quick one-timer into the back of the cage to tie the game up at 1-1.

McClay's goal would send the game to overtime, the fourth such game for the Pilgrims this season and second in a row after the team lost to Simmons in a shootout on Wednesday night.

The first overtime period passed without a score as NEC goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) made four saves in the first of two ten-minute periods, part of an 11-save performance for the senior. But the Bulldogs were able to break through in the 72nd minute of the game as Katrina Lee netted the game-winning goal.

The Pilgrims have now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, but they will look to get back on track on Tuesday, October 21st as they visit non-conference foe, the University of Southern Maine, for a 7:00 PM road matchup.
