Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College Women's Volleyball team (4-8) fell to non-conference UMass-Boston Beacons three to zero on Wednesday night.
The Beacons took control early in the opening set, overwhelming the Pilgrims and limiting NEC's opportunities. Freshman Teagan Saner (Plains, Mont.) recorded the lone kill of the set for NEC, while the remaining points came off UMass errors. The Beacons won the set 25-7.
NEC responded with energy in the second set, jumping out to a 2-0 lead before UMass tied it up. The set remained competitive throughout, with neither gaining more than a two-point advantage. After an 8-0 run, NEC battled back to tie the set 17-17 and later reclaimed the lead on a kill from sophomore LisaRaye Placencio (Maricopa, Ariz.). No team gained a lead larger than two points. The set went into extra points after being tied 24-24, but the B Beacons edged out a 27-25 win.
The third set mirrored the intensity of the second, featuring multiple lead changes. NEC momentarily took control on a service ace by UMB, but the Beacons answered with a six-point run. Junior Maeve Amarosa (Madbury, N.H.) halted the surge with a kill, but UMass closed out the match with a 25-17 decision. Team leaders for NEC included Amarosa with two kills, junior Tyra Kelly (Fresno, Calif.) with 2.5 blocks, and junior Samantha Winters (Dover, N.H.) with 10 digs.
The 'Grims are back in action on Friday, October 3rd at Bridges Gym against Emmanuel College at 6PM.
