Seahawks Pull Away with the Win Over Women’s Ice Hockey

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team played a hard-fought game against the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks in the early going. Things would unfortunately end in the Seahawks favor on Friday at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

THE BASICS
Score: Salve Regina University 3, New England College 0
Records: Seahawks 12-8-0, 10-3-0 NEHC | Pilgrims 2-17-0, 1-12-0 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The conference outing for the two teams began in favor of the Seahawks as it took SRU no time to settle into the game. Sophomore forward Emily Wroblewski (Lake Linden, Mich) dashed across the ice on a fastbreak that resulted in the visitors striking first only needing 1:15 to make things happen on their end. Sophomore forward Ashtyn Bringardner (Raynham, Mass.) was the one responsible for making the precise pass to the stick of Wroblewski for the one goal lead over NEC. Shots for the Seahawks occurred frequently and often as the team recorded 28 while the 'Grims only mustered eight opportunities.
  • NEC picked things up in the second period even though the period concluded scoreless. The 'Grims had numerous chances to tie things up, but the Seahawks would not allow it to happen as NEC's best chance of making things happen on the offensive side of the ice came late in the period. At 1:07 junior forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) presented the 'Grims with a fighting chance to get on the scoreboard as she sprinted her way up the left side of the ice in a two on one situation where the puck would then be passed to junior forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden). Lindberg followed through on a slapshot that was stopped by the SRU goaltender in junior Sydney Baxter (Exeter, R.I.) who made the big play for the Seahawks as the score remained in favor of SRU, 1-0.
  • Down the stretch of the final period in the closely contested game saw a NEC penalty recorded at 6:45 bestowing the Seahawks with a power play opportunity giving them the chance they needed to put the game to rest. SRU would pass the puck around until they saw the best scoring chance come about when senior defender Emma Pereria (Easton, Mass.) was at the center of the ice in the bottom zone where she made the pass to Wroblewski who then fired the shot that led to SRU's second goal with 6:11 remaining in the game. Within the time left the Seahawks tack on the final goal of the goal of the game scored by junior forward Reily Esposito (Enfield, Conn.) to conclude the game in favor of the Seahawks on the night, 3-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Despite the three goals scored sophomore goaltender Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.) was able to keep 'Grims in it for a vast majority of the game as the final two goals came late in the third period. Armour finished with 47 saves on the night.
  • SRU Baxter proved to be quite the force for the Seahawks causing all kinds of problems for the 'Grims on the offensive side of the ice earning the shutout. Baxter made 18 stops.
  • Shots on goal were in favor of the Seahawks, 82-29.
  • SRU Wroblewski recorded the game-high of two goals making it nine on the season for the talented sophomore. Esposito collects her eighth this season after gathering the last goal of the game.

UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the ice tomorrow at 3:00 PM for another showdown against the Seahawks from Lee Clement Arena.
