Men’s Ice Hockey Extends Winning Streak to Four with 3-1 Win over USM

GORHAM, Maine – The New England College men's ice hockey team saw their winning streak reach four straight as the Pilgrims completed the weekend sweep of the University of Southern Maine at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham, Maine on Saturday in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 3, Southern Maine 1
Records: Pilgrims 6-10-1, 5-6-1 NEHC | Huskies 5-11-1, 2-9-1 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was the Huskies who got on the board first as sophomore Kayde Kinaschuk (Calgary, Alb.) scored the game's first goal at the 11:20 mark of the opening period.
  • Southern Maine looked to add to their lead later in the first but fumbled a fast break chance, an opportunity that was immediately seized by the Pilgrims for a fast break of their own approaching the final three minutes of the first period; Sophomore forward Jack Herron (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) snatched up the loose puck, sent a pass ahead to freshman forward Egor Osipik (Minsk, Belarus) who then found senior forward Jesper Tarkiainen (Naperville, Ill.) and the senior went top-right corner for his second goal in as many games.
  • A USM penalty 6:18 into the second period would grant NEC with a two-minute power-play opportunity and the Pilgrims would convert 44 seconds later as sophomore forward Gunnar Sibley (Monticello, Minn.) sent a quick strike into the back of the net to put the 'Grims up, 2-1. Herron and Tarkiainen were both credited with assists on the go-ahead goal.
  • With just 1:17 left in the second, graduate defenseman Zach Nelson (Hudson, Mass.), from the point position, sent what appeared to be a shot toward the Huskies' net but it ended up being a pass to a cutting Herron who redirected the puck past the USM goaltender to make it a 3-1 game. Osipik was given the secondary assist for his second of the game.
  • The Pilgrims would shut out the hosting Huskies for the entirety of the final period, conceding just one goal across the two-game sweep of Southern Maine.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman goaltender Anthony Beaulieu (Lawrence, Mass.) made 31 saves for the 'Grims. The rookie had a .969 save percentage on the night and a .983 save percentage across both games this weekend.
  • USM senior goalie Mason Palmer (Cumming, Ga.) stopped 21/24 shots for the hosts.
  • Shots on goal were 32-24 in favor of the Huskies.
  • Herron had a huge six-point weekend as the sophomore had his fingerprints on all six NEC goals with one goal and five assists spanning the team's two games.
  • Tarkiainen, with a goal and assist in today's matchup, is now up to 16 points on the season which is good for most on the team and tied for 8th in the NEHC.
  • Osipik had his third consecutive two-point game, and the freshman ranks tied for second on the team with 13 points.
