Women’s Ice Hockey Falls to William Smith in Final Seconds

HENNIKER, N.H. – After a lopsided Friday evening matchup, the New England College women's ice hockey team made Saturday's rematch a game with a late comeback against visiting William Smith College, before falling in the final seconds of regulation in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

THE BASICS
Score: William Smith 3, New England College 2
Records: Herons 7-8-1, 7-3-0 NEHC | Pilgrims 1-15-0, 0-10-0 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • William Smith struck first on an early power-play opportunity just 2:57 into the first period on a goal from senior Brianna Felice (Middletown, N.J.). NEC went 0-2 on power plays in the period, putting some strong shots on net but unable to convert.
  • NEC held the Herons scoreless in the second period as freshman goaltender Kayden Lallier-Whissell (Stevensville, Ontario) made 18 saves in the period. The two teams took a low-scoring 1-0 game into the second intermission.
  • The Herons quickly added an insurance goal early in the third period as senior Lauren Legler (Beaconsfield, Quebec) found the back of the net with 15:23 to play.
  • With 6:32 left in the contest, it was the 'Grims who found paydirt as junior forward Kate Devlin (Walpole, Mass.), assisted by sophomore defender Mae Lafferty (South Boston, Mass.), drew the Pilgrims to within one. Not even a minute later, with 5:44 on the clock, junior forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden) intercepted a pass and scored on an unassisted goal. Suddenly, with under six minutes left to play, the Lee Clement Arena crowd was witnesses to a tie game.
  • The Herons dominated the time of possession down the stretch, but the Pilgrims defense was standing firm. But with just 12 seconds left, first-year Bella Hacker (Burlington, Mass.) was in the right place at the right time, picking up a rebound and sending it into the net for the game-winner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • For NEC, Lallier-Whissell (Stevensville, Ontario) stopped 46 shots – good for a .939 save percentage. The rookie made 101 saves across both games this weekend.
  • William Smith sophomore goalie Mia Iwicki (Mashpee, Mass.) made 12 saves in her third start of the season.
  • Shots on goal were 49-14 in favor of the Herons.
  • The visitors had a slight edge on faceoffs, 23-20.
  • The Pilgrims were active on defense blocking 26 shots with freshman forward Jamie Blondin (Oakville, Ontario) blocking six shots and Lafferty getting in the way of five.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the ice next Friday night when they travel to Salem, Massachusetts for an NEHC matchup against Salem State at 6:00 PM.
  • William Smith plays their next game at Hamilton College for a non-conference bout on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.
