Field Hockey Improves to 3-0 with 3-1 Win Over Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. - The New England College field hockey team came away with a hard-fought win against Clark University on Wednesday evening at the Granger Athletic Complex in Worcester, Massachusetts, in non-conference action.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 3, Clark University 1
Records: Pilgrims 3-0 | Cougars 1-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter of play was largely a defensive battle resulting in just one shot on goal for each side, however graduate Greer McCarty (White River Junction, Vt.) made the most of Clark's lone opportunity and put the Cougars on the board with 4:11 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • The 'Grims would rattle off three shots on net in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but all three were turned away by Clark junior goalkeeper Loren Root (Sherborn, Mass.). With 3:32 to go before halftime, sophomore forward Kylee Henriquez (Methuen, Mass.) found senior midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.) who would finally get one past Root for her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • Coming out of the break, both teams were in search of the go-ahead goal in what was setting up to be a low-scoring affair. With under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, NEC capitalized following a penalty corner as junior midfielder Tatum Golis (New Hartford, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season with the assist coming from sophomore defender Kate Bourgeois (Troy, Maine) to take the 2-1 lead.
  • Junior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) made four critical saves in the fourth quarter to keep the Cougars at bay before McCamish provided an insurance goal with her second score of the game with just 1:28 left to play, with the assist from graduate forward Drea Chin (Laconia, N.H.). Clark failed to put any shots on net over the last 90 seconds and the 'Grims left Worcester with a third straight win to open the 2024 campaign.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Anderson made six saves and has now allowed just two goals through the team's first three games this season. Root stopped 7/10 shots-on-goal for the Cougars.
  • With her assist in the fourth quarter, Chin reached 150 career points here at NEC.
  • Shots were close between the two teams with NEC having the slight advantage, 16-15, and a 10-7 advantage in shots-on-goal.
  • It was a clean game for the 'Grims as they did not receive any cards while the Cougars were given one green card and two yellow cards.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field next Tuesday when they visit Fitchburg State University for a matchup with the Falcons at 4:00 PM.
  • Clark plays their next game at home against those very same Fitchburg State Falcons on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
