FITCHBURG, MASS. - The New England College field hockey team improved to 4-0 on the season with a strong win at Fitchburg State on Tuesday evening at the Elliot Field Athletic Complex in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in a continuation of the team's non-conference slate.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 2, Fitchburg State 1
Records: Pilgrims 3-0, 0-0 GNAC | Falcons 0-3, 0-0 MASCAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With just about 7:45 to go in the first quarter, graduate forward Drea Chin (Laconia, N.H.) drove around a couple of defenders and took a big shot on goal that was saved by Falcon's goalkeeper Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.). The deflection off the save ended up in the possession of sophomore forward Kylee Henriquez (Methuen, Mass.) who sent the ball toward the opposite corner of the net and was tapped in by senior midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.) to give the 'Grims a 1-0 lead.
- Still a 1-0 game into the middle of the second quarter, junior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) made a pair of great saves to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard: the first a deep attempt by Sophia Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) following a penalty corner, and the second a point-blank shot from Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) on which Anderson made a remarkable kick save.
- Fitchburg State received four penalty corners over the final 3:20 of the first half, but the NEC defense stood firm on all four to bring a 1-0 Pilgrim advantage into halftime.
- The Pilgrims were given their first penalty corner about three minutes into the second half, and shortly thereafter earned their second with 10:12 left in the third quarter. Off the corner, Chin received a pass at the top of the semi-circle and struck a shot on net that was temporarily saved by Morse before McCamish redirected the ball up-and-over the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game.
- With 8:51 left in the fourth quarter, things would become interesting as the Falcons finally managed to get a shot past Anderson. Yates capitalized on a scrum in front of the net and brough Fitchburg within one.
- Although the Falcons made it a one-goal game, the 'Grims would dominate the time of possession over the final eight minutes of the game and hold on for the win. Strong defense has become a common theme over the first four games of the 2024 season
