Momentum Halts at Norwich for Women’s Lacrosse

Northfield, Vt. – The New England College women's lacrosse team could not contain Norwich University on the road in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday at the Sabine Field in Northfield, Vermont.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 9, Norwich University 15
Records: Pilgrims 4-7, 2-5 (GNAC) | Cadets 7-3, 5-2 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter was all Norwich as they came out in full force by connecting on six goals and showed no signs of slowing down as senior midfielder Leocadia Clarck (Stowe, Vt.) recorded a hat-trick within that stretch. The last goal of the quarter came off a turnover in the Cadet's territory where Norwich would run three-quarters of the field in record time as a pass from freshman midfielder Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.) led to a quick shot by sophomore attacker Sophie Zemianek (St. Albans, Vt.) to put in the score with one second remaining.
  • NEC would use their counterstrike against the Cadets in nine minutes in the second period of play where three different 'Grims contributed a point for the scoreboard which was headlined by a hustle-effort play by sophomore attacker Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) who took the ball away from Norwich on a clear attempt and sprinted to the crease where she would meet sophomore midfielder Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) to convert on the 2-on-1 advantage ultimately bringing the road team closer only down 6-3.
  • The Cadets would answer with an astonishing three-goal run in a 1:53 time span including a point where junior attacker Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) caught the defense sleeping as she warped around the opposing crease and flicked one in, giving Norwich a comfortable 9-3 lead going into halftime.
  • Coming out of the extended break, Norwich's Fielder snuck in her second goal 5:57 into the third period of play, which would then later be outshined by two much-needed goals from 'Grims' graduate midfielder Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) who had one of them that sailed past the goaltender's head after a quick burst into shooting position. The Cadets would get back in the driver seat after a man-up goal from junior midfielder Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass), but be halted from any further action with a free-position goal from NEC's freshman midfielder Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.). Norwich would get the last laugh in the third quarter as they put in another last-second goal from freshman attacker Tori Jarvis (South Windsor, Conn.) who performed a turnaround shot that cruised in to give the cadets a 12-6 lead at the end of the period.
  • The 'Grims would give their final push in the fourth quarter as senior attacker Jacqueline Nee (Manchester, N.H.) came in flanking the defense where she would get the shot in to inch closer to the home team. But the Cadets would not let any miracles shine on the Sabine Field as they connected on yet another three-goal run from various players to extend their lead to 15-7. With 3:33 left in regulation, NEC's Kelly would ignite another two-score run of her own getting herself over the hat-trick but would not be enough to overcome the large deficit, giving Norwich the 15-9 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • NEC senior goalkeeper Carleigh Knotts (Dover, Del.) racked up 18 saves on the evening.
  • Norwich senior goaltender Carlie Henning (Dawsonville, Ga.) tallied seven saves in the win moving her to 3-0 on the season.
  • The Cadets almost doubled the 'Grims on total shots with a 50-27 upper hand.
  • NEC went 14/23 on clear attempts whereas Norwich went 17/31.
  • The 'Grims were led by Kelly who finished off with four goals, an assist, two ground balls, and a caused turnover
  • Clark was the player of the day for the Cadets, as she tallied three goals, an assist, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

UP NEXT
