LYNN, MASS. – The New England College baseball team failed to overcome an early deficit en route to a 9-4 loss to Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Fraser Field in Lynn, Massachusetts late Tuesday evening.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 4, Lasell University 9
Records: Pilgrims 4-17, 2-2 GNAC | Lasers 16-7, 5-1 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lasers got off to a hot start, quickly loading the bases for infielder Ross Audet (Swansea, Mass.) and the senior would clear the bases just as quick on a triple to deep right center field. Audet would come home to score on a wild pitch to cap off the four-run first inning for the hosts.
- NEC would manage to get one run back in the top of the second inning as senior catcher Lachlan Rees (Adelaide, Australia) reached on a hit-by-pitch, advanced to second on a single by graduate infielder Cooper Ribaudo (Salem, N.H.) before moving up to third on a groundout, and finally scoring on a wild pitch.
- Up 4-1 in the second, Lasell would add to their lead following a couple of extra base hits resulting in a three-run inning to make it a 7-1 ballgame after two.
- After a pair of scoreless innings in the third and fourth, the 'Grims led off the fifth with back-to-back singles from freshman outfielder Jason Figuereo (Lynn, Mass.) and hot-hitting junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.). Senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) would bring Figuereo home on an RBI groundout to make it 7-2. However, Lasell would plate a run in the bottom of the inning to bring the Lasell lead back to six.
- In the top of the eighth inning, the 'Grims would begin to put a rally together. Singles by Rees and sophomore outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.), followed by a walk of Figuereo, would set the table for Philibotte. With a Pilgrim on every base, Philibotte would once again come through, sending a single into center field and scoring two. But just one batter later, Lasell would force a timely double play to kill the rally and end the inning.
- Lasell would add one more insurance run in the bottom of the eighth before working around a one-out walk of senior infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) to finish off the 'Grims in the top of the ninth inning – ultimately taking the game, 9-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Lasell starting pitcher, junior Jeremy Blackwood (Windsor, Conn.), earned the win after allowing just two unearned runs across five-and-two-third innings. Meanwhile, NEC junior right-handed pitcher Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.) suffered the loss after covering five innings.
- Philibotte continued to see the ball well tonight, now having driven in eight runs over the team's last two games. In the month of April, Philibotte is batting .438.
- Figuereo has really begun to find his footing, as the freshman has put together a five-game hit streak while hitting .538 across that stretch.
- Despite the final score, Lasell only out-hit NEC 11-10, but it was NEC's 11 runners left-on-base that made the difference.
UP NEXT
- NEC is back on the field tomorrow, Wednesday, when they play host to Colby-Sawyer College in a single game starting at 3:30 PM, rescheduled from Saturday, April 6th.
- Lasell plays their next game at 3:00 PM on Thursday as they travel to Framingham State University for a non-conference matchup.
