NASHUA, N.H. – The New England College softball team split their double-header at Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Monday evening at Raider Diamond in Nashua, New Hampshire, losing a heart-breaker in game one, 1-0, before rallying to win game two, 8-6. The Pilgrims run their record to 7-14 on the season and 1-3 in GNAC play, winning their first GNAC contest in school history.
TOP 'GRIMS
- NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) had a brilliant performance in game one, allowing just three hits in six and one-third innings with no earned runs while striking out three Raiders. Olson then came into the game in relief in the nightcap, going five-and-two-thirds innings and allowing just one earned run.
- NEC graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) tallied four hits and three stolen bases on the night. With 24 stolen bases on the season, Gagne comes to within two steals of the Pilgrim single-season record of 26.
- NEC freshman first baseman / designated player Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) was dominant in game two while batting cleanup, with two hits and four runs batted in. Grimes' two-RBI triple in the top of the first inning plated Gagne and sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.), and she would drive Giesler in again in the top of the third off an RBI groundout. With the 'Grims trailing by one in the top of the fourth, Grimes singled to left to drive in sophomore right fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.), tying it up at 5-5.
- Giesler's RBI double in the top of the sixth of game two – driving in Gagne – broke a tie, giving NEC a 6-5 lead. Giesler finished with three hits on the day.
- Tied 6-6 at the top of the seventh, Rodriguez came to the plate with one runner on and doubled to left center, driving in sophomore third baseman Julia Maker (Warwick, R.I.). On the very next at-bat, sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.) singled to right to drive in Rodriguez, putting the Pilgrims up 8-6, which proved to be the final score.
- Lemay went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two.
