Rally Comes Up Short to Falcons in Softball

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College softball team lost both ends of their double-header against visiting Albertus Magnus College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Old Concord Road Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

GAME 1 – ALBERTUS MAGNUS 4, NEC 0
  • The Falcons pounced on the top of the first with an RBI triple from AMC junior shortstop Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) to drive in sophomore right fielder Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.Y.). In the top of the third, Edwards would triple again to drive in junior designated player Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.), putting the visitors up 2-0.
  • Arent would make it 3-0 in the top of the fifth, with an RBI-double to plate freshman pinch-runner Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.). Then in the top of the seventh, Arent hit a solo-shot over the centerfield fence for the final score.
  • Albertus Magnus sophomore pitcher Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) picked up the win for the Falcons, allowing just three hits and no earned runs over seven innings.
  • NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) went six innings for the Pilgrims, allowing just three runs.
GAME 2 – ALBERTUS MAGNUS 9, NEC 6
  • The Falcons once again jumped out to an early lead in game two in the top of the first with three runs, two of those coming up with a two-RBI double from senior catcher Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) and an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.). That lead would increase to four in the top of the third when freshman first baseman Julianna Petruzziello (West Haven, Conn.) hit an RBI double to plate freshman leftfielder Jazmyn Browne (Bristol, Conn.).
  • The 'Grims exploded in the bottom of the third when freshman catcher Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) singled to left-center, scoring sophomore designated player Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) and sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.). Two batters later, sophomore outfielder Surena Montero (Bakersfield, Calif.) came to the plate and singled up the middle to plate sophomore right fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.). Just like that, NEC was within one.
  • Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Pilgrims against busted out, this time with NEC sophomore third baseman Julia Maker (Warwick, R.I.) hitting a two-RBI triple to left to drive in Garcia and Rodriguez. The very next at bat, Montero would have her second RBI base hit of the game, plating Maker and tying it up at 6-6.
  • But the Falcons would close the game out with two runs in the top of the sixth and one more in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
  • Garcia finished three-for-four with two RBI, while Montero had two hits, both scoring runs.
