Philibotte Hits for Cycle, Baseball Falls to Albertus

WEST HAVEN, CONN. – Despite a career day from junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.), who completed the cycle with an eighth inning home run, the New England College baseball team fell to Albertus Magnus in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Sunday afternoon at Quigley Stadium in West Haven, Connecticut.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 11, Albertus Magnus 23
Records: Pilgrims 4-17, 2-2 GNAC | Falcons 4-14, 3-6 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The hosting Falcons pieced together a run in the third inning as junior Adriel Espada (Bridgeport, Conn.) reached on a leadoff single, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and finally came home to score the game's first run on a sacrifice fly.
  • In the bottom of the third, freshman outfielder Jason Figuereo (Lynn, Mass.) led off the inning with a double, and would tie the game up two batters later as the rookie scored on an error on a ball put into play by graduate infielder Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.).
  • The 'Grims would claim the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as with the bases loaded and one out, Philibotte would drive in two on his team-leading sixth double of the season. One batter later, Worth would make it a 4-1 ballgame, scoring Figuero on an RBI groundout.
  • Albertus would not stay down for long. Espada led off the fifth with a double, followed by a hit-by-pitch, and a game-tying three-run home run by junior Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.). The inning would go from bad to worse, as the Falcons loaded the bases for sophomore Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) who would clear the bases on a three RBI double. Albertus would bat around in the inning, with Spataj driving in two more runs on a double before NEC could finally get out of the inning.
  • Down 14-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, in dire need of base runners, sophomore outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.) and graduate infielder Cooper Ribaudo (Salem, N.H.) would set the table with a pair of singles to start the inning. Philibotte would once again come through with runners on base, scoring both on a triple for his third and fourth RBIs of the day. Philibotte would tag-up and score the team's third run of the inning on a lineout to left field by Worth – his second ribbie of the day.
  • The unrelenting offense of Albertus would add five more runs in the seventh frame, taking firm control of the game with a 19-7 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Ribaudo led off with another single. With two outs, and Ribaudo at first, Philibotte, just a home run shy of the cycle, smacked his first home run of the season and the fourth long ball of his career to complete the cycle.
  • With the game seemingly already out of reach, Albertus tacked on an additional four runs in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, a double off the bat of graduate infielder Tyler Gendron (Milford, N.H.) would advance senior infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) to third, with Cannavo then scoring on a wild pitch. The next at-bat would result in another Albertus error, allowing Gendron to score. Ribaudo would follow up with another single – part of a four-hit day for the grad student – putting runners on first and second. Two batters later, Figuereo would hit a single to load the bases before the Falcons would get Philibotte to ground out and end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Albertus sophomore Riley Corgan (New Milford, Conn.) allowed four earned runs across six innings and being credited with the win. Freshman Aaron McIntyre (East Haven, Conn.) earned the three-inning save.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Pilgrims, lasting four and one-third innings.
  • Philibotte went 4-for-6 at the plate, completing the cycle while driving in six runs and scoring twice.
  • On the other side, Espada went a perfect 6-for-6 in the batter's box with five RBIs and four runs scored. Spataj had just two hits for the Falcons but drove in six runs.
