MCLA Edges Softball in Thriller

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College softball team lost 12-11 to visiting Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a rare regular-season single game in non-conference action on Sunday at Old Concord Road Field in Henniker, New Hampshire. The Pilgrims run their record to 9-21 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 12-10 going into the bottom of the sixth, NEC sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) singled to right, driving in freshman centerfielder Lauren Hendricks (Fontana, Calif.), cutting the deficit to one. But the 'Grims went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving them the loss.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Hendricks was a perfect three-for-three with three runs scored, two stolen bases and a walk.
  • Giesler finished three-for-five on the day with three runs batted in, a double and a stolen base.
  • NEC freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) also had three hits, including a pair of doubles with two runs batted in.
  • NEC sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) had two hits and a sacrifice fly, totaling three RBI.
  • NEC freshman pitcher Wren Anhalt (Brooksville, Fla.) gave up no earned runs in two and a third innings.
  • MCLA sophomore outfielder Kristie Zator (Windham, Conn.) led the Trailblazers with three hits and two runs scored, while first year outfielder Hannah Mitchem (Baltimore, Md.) drove in three runs.
SENIOR DAY
  • Prior to the game, the New England College softball program and athletics department recognized this year's sole senior as part of Senior Day. NEC senior pitcher Jocelin Vachon (Manchester, N.H.) was honored by coaches, teammates, family members and fans for all of her accomplishments at NEC both on and off the field. Although her time with the program may be coming to an end, she will forever be a part of the 'Grims family.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday when they travel to Keene State for a 3:00 p.m. double-header.
  • MCLA plays their next game at SUNY Cobleskill, that also coming on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
